We had an amazing drill today with U.S. Coast Guard Station Ponce Inlet in New Smyrna Beach, FL. We had a tour of the station from BM2 Pousksa. He was very knowledgeable and loves his career. He said he puts himself in the mindset “what if it was my family” every time he goes on a rescue and this keeps him going. We had a great tour of the 45 foot boat. Their we meet with MK3 Vega who keeps the boat and the other boats in top running order. He was very knowledgeable about the boat and taught the cadets about the engine that keeps the 45 on the mission of saving lives. We also met Fireman Rivera, he showed the cadets how to extract water with the bilge pump if they encounter a vessel taking on water. He also showed us on te 45 footer the fire equipment and how it works to put out a fire. They have an unlimited supply of water that they use from the ocean.
A very BIG HooYah to U.S. Coast Guard Station Ponce Inlet and the men and women who do what they do, day in and day out to save lives, teach the public about boating safety, fishing laws and if need be law enforcement on the water. We had a great pre drill this past Saturday. Scott with DeLand Naval Air Station Museum called and asked if I could help with a large tour and it was a large youth group. I said I would be glad to help. After taking with him further I found out it was another U.S. Naval SEA CADET unit, the Chris Kyle Battalion (SEA BEES) from the Kissimmee, FL area. I then said I would get some cadets from our unit to help with the tour and their drill day. This is our Squadrons drill location so our cadets assisted in the tour. We had a great day together in a combined drill day. I know many of the cadets and the adults leaders from in person training's I have been to in the past like RT or A school. It was nice to see them all again and to talk to them and see how things are going. That is another great thing about SEA CADETs and the units, we are all one BIG “Little” Navy family. A big thank you to the DeLand Naval Air Station Musuem for hosting this wonderful unit and the cadets from our unit to assist in the tours. Hopefully we will have more combined drills in the future. We had our final drill today, breaking for summer and will resume in the fall when school starts. This allows cadets to go on trainings and be with family for the summer break. We had a great drill today with @Erich Fisher and he is with @Flotilla 44 Deland Beach, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He taught our cadets the USCG Safe Boating Course. This course was 8 hours and covered in depth everything from safety lanyards on jet skis, knowing your boat and creating a Float Plan to docking, channel marking, safety signs, trailering and Kayaks. After the class cadets had to take a 50 question test. And I am happy to announce they all passed. Did you know anyone who was born after 01 JAN 1988 needs to take this course to operate a boat in the state of Florida. Cadets now have that and they are well equipped for this summer on the water with family and friends and can now point out safety issues to someone who may not know. Having taking this course I feel confident we prepared them for a safer summer on the water. Did you know there is no age restriction to operate a boat in the state of Florida so cadets are better prepared if have to operate boat in an emergency situation or under supervision of parents. Cadets will now earn a Propeller appurtenance which signifies they have taken the course. Again a very BIG thank you to Eric Fisher, which has a 28’sail boat with a 40’ mast, and taking the time out of his busy life to teach and instruct the cadets on safe boating and a big Hooyah USCG AUX and Flotilla 44!

We had an amazing drill today with Fire Station 81 in DeLand. Cadets meet Josh, he is the new fireman at station 81, and he went in great detail about the Tower 81 truck and the role it plays as well as all the equipment on board. We also met with Kyle, he has been with station 81 for 5 years, and he also went in great detail about Tower 81 and showed the cadets the clean air breathing system and other equipment on board. Next the cadets met with Christopher, he is prior US NAVY E5/PO2 and was a navigator. He now navigates Squad/Engine 81 to where ever it’s needed in DeLand. Cadets learned about Squad/Engine 81 and all the equipment on board. Cadets toured the station and learned about the Fire services and roles each of the Fireman play and hopefully sparking a possible carrier path. Fun fact this station gets an average of 4500 calls per year and the Squad/Engine 81 gets sent out 12 times a shift. While we were there it went out twice. A very big thank you to Station 81 and the brave men and woman who do what they do selflessly. We can all sleep better knowing Station 81 is on the job. Hooyah DeLand Fire Station 81! ... See more

Come out this Monday the 30th at 1000 to honor veterans who have gave their all for this great nation at Bill Dreggor’s Park in DeLand FL for a Memorial Day ceremony. Afterword come out the the American Legion Adam Quinn Post 6 in DeLand for an after ceremony luncheon (paid). See you all there. ... See more

Today we also had a great time at the American Legion Adam Quinn Post 6. The American Legion Post 6 Auxiliary gave our unit a donation in the amount of $1000. Also the Persimmon Hollow Womans Club of DeLand contributed to the donation as well. This was much needed donation to our unit. Units just don’t run volunteerism of the adults in the unit, without the support of organizations in the community and generous donations like this weather it is a meeting location or monetary we would not be able to do what we do. This helps the unit to provide much more learning and training opportunities, uniform items, transportation and other items not mentioned. This helps to provide the cadets the best learning and exploring possible and to carry out the mission of the SEA CADET CORPS of creating future leaders with character. Today we also had an amazing time with the Volusia County Emergency Medical Service. They provided an ambulance to our drill location and taught the cadets the mission of Volusia County EMS and what a day in the life of a paramedic/EMT is. They also spoke on a career path in the medical field. They also spoke in depth about the ambulance and all the lifesaving equipment on board and took the time to explain in great detail what everything is and how it’s used. This was a tremendous learning opportunity for all the cadets and unit staff. All the Paramedic/EMT’s had a great time as well. They also went on a tour of our meeting location at the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum. We cannot thank them for the dedication and devotion to helping others in their desperate time of need. This past Saturday we also had an amazing time with the Florida Army National Guard’s 265th Air Defense Artillery Regiment Battery B 1st Battalion in DeLand, FL. The 265th primary mission is air defense and Sergeant Dekoeyer soon showed the cadets why. We started our time their eating MREs for chow and learning about the Florida Army National Guard. Fun fact that the Guard reports to the Governor of Florida and is only Federal once the Executive branch orders the Guard to activate. SGT Dekoeyer spoke to the cadets that the guard is a great option if going full time active duty in the other branches is not. The guard will also help pay for college and stay in the community we live and work in.
Cadets got a chance to see the air defense capabilities up close by holding a trainer (not live) FIM-92 Stinger man-portable air-defense system, heat seeking surface-to-air missile. Next the cadets got a tour of the facility. Finally the cadets capped of this wonder tour with a fun team building exercise in which they had to move as a Team a tire and water jugs to the finish line. This taught the cadets to work as a team together and they came up with some interesting ideas. Ultimately to move the items they placed in the back of a HUMMER and push it in neutral across the line working smarter, not harder.
