DeLand Excellence Squadron – U.S. NAVAL SEA CADET CORPS
Welcome!
We are the DeLand Excellence Squadron! The United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) is a national youth leadership development organization that promotes interest and skill in naval disciplines while instilling strong moral character and life skills through leadership and technical programs modeled after the Navy’s professional development system. The USNSCC is comprised of two programs. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) program is for young people ages 13 through the completion of high school. Also included under the USNSCC umbrella is our junior program, the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) for youth ages 10 through 13. Our meetings, we call them drills, are on Saturdays, bimonthly at the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum. Sometimes we supplement or replace those sessions with visits to military installations, ships and other points of interest.
US Naval Sea Cadet Corps and the Navy League
At the request of the Department of the Navy, the Navy League of the United States established the USNSCC in 1962 to “create a favorable image of the Navy on the part of American youth”.
Today’s U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps continues to further the image of our maritime services by adhering to a standardized training program designed to:
1. Develop an interest and ability in seamanship and seagoing skills
2. Instill virtues of good citizenship and strong moral principles in each cadet
3. Demonstrate the value of an alcohol-free, drug-free and gang-free lifestyle
The Sea Cadet program offers young people an opportunity to learn about career paths that they otherwise would not realize even existed. Being a Sea Cadet promotes self-discipline, honor, courage and commitment – values the US Navy holds dear. You can be a Sea Cadet with no commitment to join the Navy or any other military service. Our national website, www.seacadets.org has lots of information and videos explaining who we are and we encourage you to take a look.
Training
During the summer months and winter holiday break from school, cadets have the opportunity to train in various locations nationwide to receive hands-on, exceptional training from technical experts in a wide array of fields including, but not limited to: Aviation, Construction (Seabee’s), Medical (Corpsman), Culinary, Photojournalism, Search and Rescue, Scuba, Field Operations, STEM, Special Warfare Operations, and many more.
Do I have to join the military to be a Naval Sea Cadet?
No. There is absolutely no obligation to enter the military service. However, many Naval Sea Cadets are accepted into Service Academies, awarded ROTC Scholarships, or allowed to enlist at an advanced pay grade.
